What is a Periodontist

gum disease treatment pulaski

Periodontists specialize in the soft tissues of the mouth, as well as the jawbone that provides support to the teeth. After graduating from an accredited dental school, he or she will go on to an additional three years of training in a periodontology residency program. There, the dentist will focus on surgical and non-surgical management of periodontal disease and the placement of dental implants.

Conditions Treated by a Periodontist

Periodontists mainly work to prevent gum disease, to diagnose problems affecting the gums and jaw, and to treat the various stages of gum disease.

Mild, moderate and advanced gum disease can be treated by first addressing the bacterial infection at the root of the problem, providing periodontal treatment, then providing information and education on good oral hygiene and the effective cleaning of the teeth.

The most commonly treated conditions include gingivitis, mild/ moderate/ advanced periodontitis, and missing teeth.

Treatments Performed by a Periodontist

Periodontists perform a range of treatments, aimed at halting the progression of gum disease, replacing missing teeth and improving the appearance of the smile.

Common treatments include implant placement, osteoplasty (hard tissue recontouring), gingivoplasty (soft tissue recontouring), bone grafting, deep pocket cleanings, and crown lengthening.
