Periodontal (Gum) Disease Treatment in Green Bay

Gum Disease Prevention Green Bay

Periodontal or gum disease is an affliction that affects so many people; it’s as common as the everyday cold. It’s caused by plaque and tartar buildup that isn’t removed regularly but can also be caused by lifestyle habits and genetics.

What is Dental Plaque Comprised Of?

Plaque is a mixture of bacteria, food debris, and saliva that can adhere to teeth and turn into calculus (tartar). If the plaque isn’t removed with regular dental visits, periodontal disease can result. This is where the plaque and calculus will begin to attack and destroy the gums and bone underneath. As with most dental disease, prevention is key.

Signs of Periodontal Disease

There are few signs of periodontal disease, and it’s virtually painless in its early stages. After a while, however, your gums will begin to appear red and swollen, and they may even begin to bleed. If left untreated, periodontal disease can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Gum Disease and Total Systemic Health

And if that’s not bad enough, periodontal disease has been linked to a number of systemic diseases like stroke, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes.

If you smoke, you might want to stop, as smoking is one of the greatest risk factors for periodontal disease. To combat the disease, practice good oral hygiene, eat a balanced diet with less carbohydrate-rich foods, and schedule regular dental visits. Keeping these positive lifestyle choices as habits can help to reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.
